Wayne McCarthy of Pratt & Whitney in Cheshire met State Senator Sam Caligiuri for the first time today before the debate in New Britain.  Wayne asked him why Sam hadn't stepped up to help the workers there like Chris Murphy did when Pratt announced that the plant would be closed and the jobs moved to Singapore.  Take a look:

Chris Murphy hits back at negative ads by standing with Connecticut voters

October 15 2010 by Max | Permalink

Chris Murphy stood with more than 100 Connecticut supporters in New Britain today to denounce the new smear ads sponsored by a shadowy Washington interest group. The group, the American Action Network, is spending $800,000 on these attacks and their agenda puts Wall Street ahead of Connecticut: more tax breaks for the wealthy, outsourced jobs, and no accountability for Wall Street’s riskiest practices.

Chris made it clear that he will fight these false attacks by relying on his strong grassroots support. Voters here know that Chris is fighting for jobs across the district and regular people spoke about how Chris has helped them in this tough economy. Kathy Platt of Aldermen Motors spoke about how Chris was one of the first to listen, and help save her family’s car dealership after GM sent notice to close it after eight decades in business in Meriden.

Jan Smolinski, a Cheshire resident whose son went missing in Waterbury years ago, also spoke at the event. Murphy and Smolinski have worked on federal legislation to update missing persons laws so that families across the nation won’t have to go through what the Smolinski family has gone through in their search for their loved one.

Chris is fighting hard for the families of the Fifth District, and with the help of his grassroots supporters, we will overcome the money flowing out of Wall Street and Washington.

29 Days Away

October 04 2010 by Max | Permalink

We're now 29 days away from Election Day, and Team Murphy spent this beautiful first weekend of October canvassing across the district, from Waterbury and Woodbury up to Torrington in the Northwest Corner. On Saturday, Chris greeted dozens of volunteers at our Waterbury canvass, along with Senate candidate Richard Blumenthal, and then walked around the Harwinton Fair, where voters thanked him for his work protecting American jobs.

On Sunday, volunteers gathered at our Torrington office to canvass for Chris up there, and heard voters' concerns about education and keeping good jobs here in Connecticut.

Over the next four weeks, we'll be around the district, relying on grassroots support to get Chris over the finish line on November 2. Hope to see you out there!

Chris Named “Defender of Children” by First Focus Campaign for Children

October 01 2010 by Max | Permalink

Representative Chris Murphy has been named a “Defender of Children” by the First Focus Campaign for Children, a national, bipartisan child advocacy group. First Focus is recognizing legislators who worked for legislative solutions that would best meet the needs of children. In addition, the organization considered Members who demonstrated extraordinary initiative by spearheading activities such as sponsoring hearings or garnering the support of their colleagues to improve the health and well-being of children.

Check out the press release here!

Chris has been a strong supporter of children’s rights and advancing their opportunities, though fighting for children’s health care and voting for continued funds to public schools at a time when cities and towns are strapped for cash during these tough economic times.

Chris thanks the First Focus Campaign for their support, and looks forward to continuing the fight for children in Congress.

On the Ground

On the ground all across the district, Murphy campaign volunteers are making calls and knocking on doors for Chris. In Torrington, one volunteer brought apples and cider into Democratic headquarters from their orchard. In Danbury, volunteers make calls and assemble lawn signs for their neighbors to show their support of Chris, and in New Britain, students are filling up our headquarters making calls.

This month, Chris finished his “41 Towns in 41 Days” tour of the district, talking with constituents about his plan to strengthen our “Buy American” laws to keep manufacturing jobs here in Connecticut. He also is listening to the concerns of voters about jobs, health care, and education, and getting their ideas on all sorts of matters, which he will bring back to Washington.

In the next 33 days, Chris and the rest of Team Murphy will be rallying support. You can help by volunteering in one of our field offices in all corners of the district. Chris will need the help of grassroots supporters to win this race.

Chris began his "41 Towns in 41 Days" tour of the 5th District today, starting at the Warren General Store in the Northwest corner of the district. Chris talked about work being done to help small businesses like the General Store, including tax credits in the Health Care Reform bill enabling an employer to deduct up to 50% of the health insurance of their employees.

In Salisbury, Chris talked with a public school teacher worried about education funding while towns are being forced to slash budgets. He spoke about the importance of sustaining these jobs, and keeping up the policies that are getting us out of our economic hole.

Chris' tour will continue through August. Hope to see you in your town!
