An amendment that gives manufacturers the option of telling the Department of Defense how winning a contract would support or add jobs passed the House of Representatives Friday.
Rep. Chris Murphy, D-5th District, has made "Buy American" contracting rules a signature issue, and he was responsible for getting the amendment attached to the Department of Defense authorization bill.
It would need to get support in the Senate to become law.
The Pentagon would not be required to consider contractors' jobs impact statements.
It was the third year Murphy had tried to get the amendment passed. His office called the passage "a major victory in his fight to ensure that when the federal government spends American tax dollars, it supports American jobs and American companies."
"This is a big day for Buy American reform," Murphy, the endorsed Democrat for U.S. Senate, said in a press release. "A majority of members of the House of Representatives stood with American workers and manufacturers today, and this is a fight I'm proud to continue until this becomes law."
