Release: UAW Joins Team MurphyJune 13 2011
Farmington – Today, at their regional HQ in Farmington, leadership and members of UAW Region 9A will announce their endorsement of Chris Murphy for Senate in 2012. In doing so, they become the first statewide organized labor union to endorse in the 2012 CT-SEN race.
“Ultimately this Senate race will be about fighting for, and protecting, the regular, every day working person as they strive to make a better life for their families”, Murphy said. “I can think of no better partner in this effort than my friends at UAW. It’s an honor to have them as such an early part of our grassroots campaign.”
According to Julie Kushner, UAW Region 9A Director, the decision to endorse Rep. Murphy was unanimous amongst the region's leadership elected to make endorsement decisions.
"Chris is the kind of person we need in the US Senate. He has fought tirelessly for our members and their rights where they work and live". On his record, Kushner added, "Chris is pushing for a law that says the federal government must do business with US companies instead of buying goods overseas. This simple law will create jobs for our kids and our families. Chris is one of us and together we are going to make him our next US Senator".
The United Auto Workers (UAW) Region 9A consists of over 8,000 active and retired workers in Connecticut representing workers from legal services, casino dealers, small manufacturing, childcare and municipal employees.
“This very early support of the working men and women of UAW means the world to me”, Murphy added. “Both because of the values that UAW represents and the organizational strength they bring to the team.”
Since announcing his candidacy in January, Murphy has displayed a clear and growing momentum in the race to replace retiring Senator Joe Lieberman. In joining Team Murphy, UAW joins a long list of people who have signed on to support this grassroots campaign. In just a few short months, Murphy has earned the support of Congressman John Larson, Congressman Joe Courtney, Congressman Rosa DeLauro, Congressman Jim Himes, Attorney General George Jepsen, Comptroller Kevin Lembo and Secretary of the State Denise Merrill. Murphy also has the support of over 2,000 Democratic and progressive activists from across the state and raised an impressive $1.1 million in the first quarter of the campaign.
The official endorsement announcement will take place at 10:00 am this morning at the UAW Region 9A main office on 111 South Road in Farmington, CT.
