NEW BRITAIN — At 7:55 p.m. election night, a woman outside Crosby High School in Waterbury stopped U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy.

“You know what,” she said, “I wasn’t going to vote today. But one of your volunteers knocked on my door tonight at 7 o’clock and told me, ‘You need to come out and vote for Chris Murphy.’ The woman thought to herself — if it was that important for a volunteer to take his time to knock on my door at 7 o’clock, then it’s important for me to vote for his candidate. Read More »

Congressman Murphy calls governor’s proposal to shut down rail line a ‘slap in the face’ to Danbury

DANBURY -- U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy called on Gov. M. Jodi Rell Monday to reconsider her proposal to eliminate service on several railroads including the Danbury line.

"The termination or suspension of service on the Danbury line would be a disaster," Murphy, a Democrat who represents the Fifth District, said during a press conference Monday at the Danbury train station. "The proposal is both shortsighted and wrongheaded."  Read More »

By MARA LEE - 5:48 a.m. EST, November 8, 2010

U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy began pushing the Pentagon to spend more money with American contractors and subcontractors early this year, after repeatedly hearing complaints from small manufacturers in Connecticut that big defense firms were buying parts from foreign suppliers.

The 5th District Connecticut Democrat made it a signature issue, and his arguments gained attention in Congress. Now, after winning re-election, he returns to Washington as legislation boosting American-made defense purchases remains unresolved.  Read More »

In a year when the carcasses of incumbent Democratic congressmen litter the American political landscape, Chris Murphy won a third term in the 5th District against an impressive and articulate GOP opponent in Sam Caligiuri.

And the young Mr. Murphy won it big, taking 29 of the 41 towns, crushing his opponent in the district’s five major cities, including Caligiuri’s home base of Waterbury by a comfortable couple thousand votes. The total unofficial count: Murphy, 122,743; Caligiuri, 103,980.  Read More »

New Britain Herald: Candidates should denounce campaign claims that are false

October 17 2010

It’s no secret that we’ve been appalled at the sheer viciousness of this election season’s attack ads and the creators’ complete disregard for the truth. Now, however, it’s happening in our own back yard. First, there’s the flyer that circulated in the Southington/Cheshire probate judge race. The author tried to link a candidate with one of the men accused of the horrible Cheshire home invasion. The only connection? A sign on the lawn of a home where the accused murderer used to live. Guilt by association, carried way too far. But who’s responsible? The flyer was anonymous. No one is taking ‘credit’ for it and the candidate’s opponent denies any connection with it. We’re also dismayed by another third party attack, though this one is not anonymous. On Friday, U.S. Rep Chris Murphy called a press conference to denounce an ad attacking him for supporting health care reform and alleging that the act would pay for Viagra for sex offenders — an assertion too ridiculous to be believed.  Read More »
