WATERBURY – The city will receive $3.2 million for six economic development projects as part of an appropriations bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives Thursday.
The bill, which passed the House by a vote of 221-202, is expected to go to the Senate for approval within the next few days The money, secured with the help of Rep. Christopher S. Murphy, D-5th District, includes:
$500,000 for the Waterbury Intermodal Transportation Station, which would centralize the city’s taxi, bus and rail operations in one location on Meadow Street. It has been a top priority of Mayor Michael J. Jarjura and other elected city officials.
$487,000 for Waterbury brownfields remediation, to identify the types and concentrations of contaminates in a variety of areas that need to be cleaned to allow redevelopment.
$200,000 for the Women’s Business Development Center, which provides training and technical assistance to woman-owned businesses in the state.
$500,000 to help relocate and soundproof houses in the Runway Protection zone at Waterbury- Oxford Airport. This is on top of $1.2 million already allocated for the effort.
$974,000 for the Naugatuck River Greenway, a paved urban trail that will run between Derby and Torrington.
$325,000 for Saint Mary’s Hospital renovations to increase the number of beds and services.
